Otago Christian Medical Fellowship had the privilege of hosting Anthony Hill, the current Health and Disabilities Commissioner for an evening in conjunction with OUMSA’s Wellbeing Week. He shared with us a bit about his work in dealing with errors made in the health environment, along with his background in his Christian faith and how he balances his faith alongside his work. He also talked about the culture of hospitals and how the cultural ‘rules’ will always take precedent over the rules of practice for patient safety. So it is important for us to be aware of these cultural practices in place but also not to be afraid to ask questions to investigate and challenge these concepts to make for a safer environment. His sense of humour and wisdom in how he approaches his life as a Christian made for a great evening, and was encouraging for us to see how we can impact the world around by living as Christians and serving Jesus wherever he places us.
